This resort town in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains may be better known for its skiing than for its mountain bike opportunities, but that is slowly changing. For the past two years, Sun Valley hosted the US Mountain Bike Nationals and word of its nearly 400 miles of singletrack is spreading. The town is now mentioned alongside Moab, Fruita, Crested Butte and Whistler as one of North America’s best places to ride.
This year, the nationals have moved east to Pennsylvania, but Sun Valley will continue to host the weeklong bike festival that sprang up two years ago. In addition to group rides and other events, the festival will still have plenty of racing and the premier event is the Super Enduro, sponsored by Shimano.
The event takes place over two days, and includes more than 11,000 feet of descending. “The trails are fast and flowy and more about speed and flow than sheer technical skill which makes it possible for all levels of riders to compete and have a blast,” said event director, Greg Randolph. If the great trails weren’t enticing enough, the race has a $5,000 prize purse.
Registration opened this week online, and total entries are capped at 250. The five-day Ride Sun Valley bike festival begins July 1 and runs through July 6. A list of events is below.
July 1-2 Ride Sun Valley Bike Demo and Expo
July 3 Ketchum Criterium (road and team relay categories)
July 5-6 MASSV Music Festival
