Stage 1, May 12 – Escondido to Escondido, 102.7 miles

For the first time in its history, the Amgen Tour of California will begin in Southern California and head north. Last visited in 2009, San Diego County’s 102.7-mile stage includes Mt. Palomar, a climb often compared to the Tour de France’s Alpe d’Huez. That said, the field will tackle the climb from the gentler eastern approach, rather than from the longer, steeper southern approach. And with almost 40 miles still to race from the climb’s summit to the finish line in Escondido, a field sprint is likely.
